Lions For Lambs

Lions for Lambs begins after two determined students at a West Coast University follow the inspiration of their idealistic professor & attempt to do something important with their lives. But when the two make the bold decision to join the battle in Afghanistan, the professor is both moved & distraught. Now as they fight for survival in the field, they become the string that binds together two disparate stories on opposite sides of America. On one end the professor attempts to reach a privileged but disaffected student & on the other end a Presidential hopeful is about to give a bombshell story to a probing TV journalist.

This is the outline of the movie; however the actual reason is not to tell other about its outline on my blog. After watching the movie & likening it I was marveling the openness of Hollywood. The same evening, while my facebooking session I came across the fan page of the movie & to my surprise there were only 18 fans. Well everyone has their own opinion & I am in no mood to list the number of fans for the film but I would certainly counter & comment on the people who created & are part of the anti-lions for lambs group.

The reason behind is that the basic point of most of them is that the film is a propaganda against the war on terror. I mean WTF. In the start the whole world got really charged up in favor of this war on terror but I guess now its high time that we stop playing in the hands of the establishment. Our history so far has proved it that the people in general are a no match for these high up no matter what they do. Our system has been eaten up by the spider, but I guess we can stop endorsing this concept of the war for the greater good.

I don't approve the ideologies of the extremist AT ALL. My point of concern is the new breed that they are infiltrating by spreading their ideologies more effectively than the people of moderate views & well lets just keep the governments out of it, they are all crap & we have seen that it does not really matter if the person in power has a humble background & not a well fed business tycoon family or feudal. The problem lies with the system which will go to any length to save themselves from embarrassment.

As I said before its no use dreaming that I day a hero will rise up & get this mess straight. This idea is all too lame & out of our circle of influence. The grass roots need to be fixed first so that we just don't keep on blaming the system for destroying the good men in it.

By the way WHO THE HELL created this complicated WEB that the whole world can't penetrate through????? Here I just got lost similarly the way, Professor in the movie lost the privileged student...

Sociology of Globalization

Last Friday that is the 20th of Feb. 2009 my last lecture/class was of Sociology of Globalization. As it was our introductory class our professor intended to give us a brief overview of what we will be dealing with in the whole semester. This session was quite hilarious & it also made the picture very clear.

The hilarious part was the example that our professor laid the foundation on for explaining the impacts of the globalization. First of all we discussed the features of a village (a typical Pakistani village as I don't know if the villages of other areas specially those out of the subcontinent have any resemblance to ours). Following is the base line points that we concluded:

4-well connected-know each other from head to toe

Apart from these there are some unique characters in our villages. Most prominent is the Chaudery (land lord) who comes only second to God. Now Mr. Chaudary has to interfere in each & everyone's affairs to the extent that they could be their personal family affairs. No one in the village can make any of their decisions without the consent of the Chaudary. And if someone does dare to take such a step he's considered a rebel & declared an outcast.

In the second stage of the lecture this frame was picked from our local village & put on the current global scenario. It was a perfect fit. Due to the increasing improvements in the IT sector the whole world is quite well integrated, well connected & dependent on each other. Decisions made by one government not just affect that single country but the whole world. Likewise any incident occurring in one part of the world has a deep impact on the whole world. Examples include 9/11, present situation of Swat & other tribal areas of my country, Mumbai blasts, decision of the USA to invade Iraq & Afghanistan & the list continues.

By this point I guess everyone will be able to conclude who fits the description of Mr. Chaudary at the global scale?

Considering the impact of globalization on different cultures we will realize that in the present decade & the coming one, independent cultures will have little contributing value. That country's culture will be dominant & spread who will be controlling the economic & political nerves of the world.

Lets see what other connections unfold themselves during the rest of the semester.

P.S I did not quote the Punjabi interpretations that were the key to the fun part of this lectures as I am only good at understanding Punjabi but am an amateur when it comes to my own self expression.

After giving two papers of the final exams for the fall semester of my sophomore year, I decided to have a small break before preparing for my last exam which is to take place on 12th Feb. 2009. So yesterday when I entered the heaven of my room I grabbed the first movie on the stack of yet-to-be seen ones & it turned out be Frost/Nixon.

For me the movie was relaxing & thought provoking at the same time. It was an unexplained feeling to see the President of the United States of America admitting his wrong doings. Don't know if ever any of us would ever be able to see another President or Prime Minister follow Nixon's footsteps.

Another thing that really touched me was this one single line said by Frost that attacking Cambodia changed once a moderated nation into rebels & people full of anti-American sentiments. My take on this is that this simple line sums it all up for what's going on at the present moment. By bombing innocent civilians in the name of a targeting a few radicals the establishment is breeding more & more of these radicals. Focusing just on Pakistan what's happing in our tribal areas will change the basic ideology in which we believe. No matter how much the world invests in this war on terror its only going to increase the terror & make it more horrifying.

And this breeding needs to stop.

The Value of Women in Islam

"Be careful if you make a women cry, because Allah counts her tears. Women came out of a man's rib not from his feet to be walked on, not from his head to be superior over, but from his side to be equal, under the arm to be protected & next to the heart to be loved."

"We must not cease from exploration & the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we began & to know the place for the first time".
by T.S. Eliot

I first read this in the introductory pages of Stephen R. Covey's book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Reading this part of I guess for the fourth time(because it is included in my final exam of marketing) I have just had a clear vision of what this observation means.

Price War

The expenses incurred on this video are obviously huge; location, celebs etc. During our marketing course we came to know that price war is basically a stupidity as it's a loose-loose theory. Products like soft drinks, cell phone connection etc are seen quit often following this phenomena. Then what's the point of spending such huge amounts on these commercial ads?
