Moments beyond words!!!!

Why do the consequences of misdoings of a single privileged person be faced by the whole nation? Haven't yet found an answer....

Life thinking paper

Honestly speaking the whole concept of writing a Life thinking paper was not very attractive. Just another burden during sweet winter vacations. However, I was proved completely wrong. Instead of a burden the ltp acted as a catalyst for me to seriously think about shaping my future path.

Although I am still a strong believer of one's written destiny, some new ideas opened up as alternative paths. Hopefully this experience will add to my organization for the future. Rest I leave it to the Great Lord to decide for me.

Eye Opener

The following two articles, one by Anjum Niaz & the other by Misbah Saadat, published in The Dawn last Sunday reflected our pathetic situation.

According to what Anjum has written the bombings that Pakistan is suffering in our tribal areas & now in some of our main cities as well, the people doing so don't even have to be physically present in those jets. The new invention of our super powers MQ-9 makes it way too easy for them. The headquarters of this deadly new techno toy is in the sin city, Vegas(as the old blabbing goes WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS STAYS IN VEGAS). Sitting in front of their numerous screens(having a hamburger in their other hand), radars tell them who the terrorists are(glowing images due to body heat emission). WOW!!! isn't this the best way to identify TERRORISTS?(in short there is no distinction, its just the number game, even a newborn present in an area considered to have terrorist presence will also be considered a terrorist).Well I guess this is the best distinguishing ability we can accept from those sitting & targeting from such a far oops I mean close angle.

Misbah Saadat narrated her personal experience with an insurance company where she had applied for a life insurance after the birth of her twins, in the States. After completing all the formalities her application was rejected by the their board on the pretext that she had stated in her form that she was planning to visit Pakistan within 2 months. According to the explanation given by the agent of the company, the board felt that if they approved her insurance they would be signing a deal which is bound to bring them a loss as there are 90% chances that she would not be coming back alive.

I though we were friends with the government of the United States. Well I guess now a days as everything has changed around us due to the boom of technology the definition of F.R.I.E.N.D.S has also taken up a new meaning. Need to look it up in the latest edition of a DICTIONARY.

The Blame Game!!!!

Why does Indianian government always has to blame others specially Pakistan for every mishap that takes place inside their boarders. They always try to pose an image of innocence for themselves which in most of the cases is a complete opposite of what the reality is. I completely condemn the terrorist attacks that the Mumbai people suffered but their media & government personal should avoid making any knee jerk comments.

India is not the only country which has become the victim of this mindless phenomena, the whole world is suffering from it. So instead of playing the blame game they should opt a positive attitude & cooperate with Pakistan & the rest of the world to make this world a better place to live.

By this time I think anybody who tries to use his/her mind to figure out whats happening around us, will be able to understand that all this is basically not happening because of some religious ideology. There are a number of vested interests who benefit from this spread of terror. How did our religion got the limelight in all of this has a long historical background.

As for those who are stuck with the religious side of this for them I only have to say that every religion has extremist. If you keep yourself updated with the current affairs I think that you would understand exactly what I am referring to.

I would sign off with this hope that one day we are able to get rid of this dense web of cruelty.

From Wispers of the Desert

This is written by Fatima Bhutto & is taken from her first book Whispers of the Desert!!!

BULLETS

Bullets riddle the air
Hate stalks
The streets
But sitting up high
They laugh
Nothing is wrong as long as I have power

Danger lurks around corners
Violence flows as freely as blood in the streets
Suddenly
Death is a part of everyday life
But those at top
Look down at the people and smile
Nothing is wrong
Nothing will go wrong as long as I have power

The city erupts, dissolves
The city collapses
But, at the top
They rejoice
They are in power

End 1995

I am not a very poetic oriented person, this youndra of expression flows right above my head BUT this is something which penetrated deep inside.....She has got power in her words & this is the only poetry book I have in my personal library & I love it...

The Blood Game :*(

The news about the murder of Sir Khurseed Alam Gill came as a shock to me. I haven't taken any course from him but he was quite a popular teacher among his students. However, a small incident of interaction showed me the reason behind his being so much respected. I took part in the discussion session of the alumni function where Sir Gill was among the audience. On the next working day while passing by he stopped & gave his feedback on what I said at the function & encouraged that the students be an active part of such activities..

May his soul rest in peace

This incident also made me think more deeply on this practice of blood game. It is something which unites the whole world, no social, ethnic or religious group is exempted from it. Just look whats going on around us,the media is full of such events. Be it the high profile murders such as John F Kennedy, Mir Murtaza Bhutto,Benazir etc or the everyday news that we read or what just happened to our teacher.

The grass root reason is the same, material things (power, money, property or even different view point) have become more important than the human life.To what extent these material things will be able to satisfy the human desires? Why does the inner conscious not driving crazy the responsible people behind the miseries of others? Isn't this against the law of the nature?

We are seeing the negative results of tampering with the environmental side of the nature; greenhouse effect, frequent earthquakes etc. Still we haven't learnt our lesson that disturbing the natural cycle is highly dangerous. If just the consequences of this high level moral tempering are visualized the human race might turn back to its rightful path.

Team Work!!!!

My so far deeper understanding about marketing has taught me that its success depends a great deal on team work. Every marketing success has a strongly co-ordinated team at its base. Also now days as companies are more & more working on the formula of decentralization, teamwork skills should be an essential part of our training.

Unfortunately the dilemma of our country is that we lack in team work. On 19/11/2008 Ahsan Iqbal(ex-education minister) was invited to the college by the Rotaract Club to give a lecture on the educational issues of Pakistan. He quoted an incident that some American national once asked him that why is it that Pakistanis who as individuals are second to none in any field turn a situation in a trouble when two of them come together, a crises when three of them are put together & a disaster when four of them are together????

I think that its high time that we all take view of other about us quite seriously!!!

As marketing is a team work & we Pakistanis are not at all good at it, my viewpoint is that this is also one of the reasons that we have not been able to market our country in a proper way to the rest of the world. Just look at India, how it is marketing its positive image to the world. They too have problems & in some cases problems that are worse than what we have in Pakistan but apart from all that the world is not isolating them.

Take the example of bomb blasts, they too are subjected to this problem but still countries around the global are not warning their nationals against visiting India...

Where are we heading????

MOTORCYCLE DIARIES!!!!!!

This has nothing to do with marketing but I really wanted to write a few lines after seeing this movie...

The thing that brought this movie in my list of fav. movies was the concept that how a simple young man just wanting to have some adventurous life experience before he really settles in life as a medical doctor turned out to become a revolutionist just by looking at his other countrymen who were non-exsistant for him a little while ago.

We all get some chance to look around at others the same way but I guess our lack of honesty stops us from the turning point. The movie which is based on original events also mentions this fact that the person I am referring to was full of honesty. In my view point this one factor made him so sensitive to his surroundings.

Whats history for those people is now becoming a reality for us, thus we too need honest people to get us to our rightful destination!!!!!

Putting First things First!!!!

All the time we are told how to PUT FIRST THINGS FIRST, set our priorities but after all the hassle most of us end up doing this wrong. Commonly, we priorities the wrong things & when in the end we don't achieve our goal OUR THINKING PROCESS IS ON THE RUSH!!!

My case was no different....

After going through the 1st 3habits of The 7 HABITS I have found out that how we are supposed to set our priorities. After re-setting my list I have come to the conclusion that completing them becomes much more easier & satisfying.....so far this is the most helping part for me....

On a lighter note I still cant priorities between 2 things, should I go for a new cell phone or those sunglasses that I have glued my eyes on;-p Well after all perfect implementation takes time...WHAT DO U SAY????

Effective listerning!!!

"We were given two ears but only one mouth, because listening is twice as hard as talking".

The Three Basic Listening Modes
1. Competitive or Combative Listening happens when we are more interested in promoting our own point of view than in understanding or exploring someone else’s view. We either listen for openings to take the floor, or for flaws or weak points we can attack. As we pretend to pay attention we are impatiently waiting for an opening, or internally formulating our rebuttal and planning our devastating comeback that will destroy their argument and make us the victor.

2. In Passive or Attentive Listening we are genuinely interested in hearing and understanding the other person’s point of view. We are attentive and passively listen. We assume that we heard and understand correctly. but stay passive and do not verify it.

3. Active or Reflective Listening is the single most useful and important listening skill. In active listening we are also genuinely interested in understanding what the other person is thinking, feeling, wanting or what the message means, and we are active in checking out our understanding before we respond with our own new message. We restate or paraphrase our understanding of their message and reflect it back to the sender for verification. This verification or feedback process is what distinguishes active listening and makes it effective.

There is a real distinction between merely hearing the words and really listening for the message. When we listen effectively we understand what the person is thinking and/or feeling from the other person’s own perspective. It is as if we were standing in the other person’s shoes, seeing through his/her eyes and listening through the person's ears. Our own viewpoint may be different and we may not necessarily agree with the person, but as we listen, we understand from the other's perspective. To listen effectively, we must be actively involved in the communication process, and not just listening passively.

Listening Tips
• Usually it is important to paraphrase and use your own words in verbalizing your understanding of the message. Parroting back the words verbatim is annoying and does not ensure accurate understanding of the message.
• Depending on the purpose of the interaction and your understanding of what is relevant, you could reflect back the other persons, Account of the facts, Thoughts and beliefs, Feelings and emotions, Wants, needs or motivation, Hopes and expectations.
• Don’t respond to just the meaning of the words, look for the feelings or intent beyond the words. The dictionary or surface meaning of the words or code used by the sender is not the message.
• Inhibit your impulse to immediately answer questions. The code may be in the form of a question. Sometimes people ask questions when they really want to express themselves and are not open to hearing an answer.
• If you are confused and know you do not understand, either tell the person you don’t understand and ask him/her to say it another way.
• Active listening is a very effective first response when the other person is angry, hurt or expressing difficult feelings toward you, especially in relationships that are important to you.

Effects of the 7 Habits

So far I have gone through the first 3 habits of the book and it really made some changes in me.The first change is that I am drafting a practical mission statement. Secondly, change is that I don't look at others for my decision making. And so far the last aspect is that I am trying not to submit to my TO-DO list, also I am going through my priorities again.
